During our annual Maine vacation, our nature cruise took us past the historic Bunker Ledge Monument, a maritime landmark perched atop the rocky reef between Seal Harbor (Mount Desert Island) and the Cranberry Isles. Built sometime before 1870 (exact date unknown), the monument is a 6-meter-high (20-foot) square pyramid constructed entirely of granite blocks and painted white.

This was the first time I have photographed the Bunker Ledge, but the Egg Rock lighthouse is a very familiar subject of mine. The design of this integral lighthouse is unusual for Maine. During our sightseeing cruise, passing clouds enveloped and revealed Egg Rock. Later that week, I had the opportunity to see the same lighthouse from a very different point of view–from the sky.

From the front seat of a Waco YMF biplane, I captured a very different shot of Egg Rock, as well as other Acadia landmarks.
