Over nine decades, Howard has travelled the world, playing his Hohner harmonica everywhere he goes, from the bow of a Liberty Ship at sea, to the Great Wall of China, to the UW Writers’ Institute in Madison. I had the great pleasure of meeting the man and hearing him serenade conference-goers in the lobby.

When I thanked him for letting me take some photos, Howard came back with a flattering reply.

“I’m the richest man in the world, and you’re now part of my treasure,” he said.

  • A true gift, blessing both the giver and the receiver. Your black & white photos prompted a memories of my grandfather Labbe playing his much-loved harmonica.
