During a typical winter, Lake Monona would be frozen solid by December 20th, but this winter is anything but typical. While there is plenty of ice on this dormant pier, there is still plenty of open water for the ducks and seagulls.

We are still a few weeks away from breaking the record set in 1932, when Lake Monona didn’t freeze until January 30th, but the second-latest freeze date — January 20, 2007 — seems within reach.

Good news for ducks.  Bad news for ice fishermen.
