Lucy is a thespian at heart, with a lilting voice, long auburn ponytail, and a disarming smile enhanced by silver braces and pink elastic bands.

So why would this charming young lady take up boxing as her new hobby? I never got an answer to that question during our photo shoot, as Lucy transitioned from jazz hands to jabs without missing a beat. She demonstrated her uppercut, cross, and hook, and threw in a few impressive combinations for good measure. Then, without warning, she started to tap dance and sing.

That could really throw an opponent off. It would be tough enough facing a petite southpaw with a snappy 1-2 combo. But how does one possibly defend against a sudden outburst of “Memory” from Cats?

This is the latest installment in my “True Colors in Black and White” series, in which I strive to create distinctive portraits that showcase each subject’s unique personality, profession, or avocation.
