Nate is a Spanish professor at the University of Wisconsin-Rock County, also known as “U-Rock.”
When he’s not in the classroom teaching eager students a hablar espanol, he enjoys outdoor activities such as fishing, paddling, and archery. No fancy compound bow for this guy. Nate prefers an old school wooden recurve model. ¡Muy impresionante!

Nate’s wife, MJ, captured a behind-the-scenes look at how we staged Nate’s portrait–the latest in my True Colors series. Once again, I’m using the”invisible backdrop” technique to create a shadowy look.
You can see Nate standing next to a 51-inch parabolic umbrella with diffuser, Illuminated by two remote speedlights. To achieve the shallow depth of field In the second image, while maintaining the underexposed look, I used a neutral density filter on an 85mm f/1.8 lens.
Gorgeous.
Impressive indeed! And thanks for the sneak peak into the ‘making’ of Nate Draws.
