For my first attempt at a star trails photo, I visited Donald Park near Springdale.

Donald Rock, also known in the past as “Preachers Cap”, is an erosion-resistant block of St. Peter Sandstone that became isolated as the softer sandstone around it eroded, after the continental seas retreated 450 million years ago.  The rock was an important landmark to native cultures, especially the Ho-Chunk, who visited the valley in pre-european settlement times and has continued to be a landmark for area residents for generations.

The forecast showed a brief window of dark, clear skies, allowing for a relatively brief series of 50 photos over about 30 minutes.
