I brought the old Nikon FE out of retirement, and thought it would be fun to compare film vs. digital shots taken with very similar lenses and camera settings. These were taken on January 30, the day that Amanda and I created a brief time-lapse of clouds blowing over the birch trees in the UW Arboretum.

The digital images below are straight out of my D7100, with no recoloring or retouching. The film images were provided to me by Walgreens on a CD ROM. I’m not sure what, if any, adjustments/enhancements Walgreens made to my images.

Which do you like better?

  • I like the 7100 of Amanda…better sky. The birches are so different it’s hard to say. How’s the resolution on the film? I can’t tell on my iPad.

    • Thanks for your note, Jane. I was honestly very surprised at the quality of the filM images, given that they came from a 35-year-old camera shooting inexpensive 400 ISO film. I do believe the film processing lab adjusted the contrast and saturation a bit, as I normally would with my digital images. If you look very, very closely at the film images on a large screen, you can see the grain. But, as I said, the overall quality surprised me, compared to my spiffy new digital SLR.
